Greenville, Mississippi is deep inside the Delta in the far western part of the state.  The city is bumped up against the Arkansas border.  Greenville is a small city with a population of just under 30,000 people.  The metro area is slightly bigger with just over 45,000 people.  The city is predominantly black at 83% of the population.  The city has a southern soul with friendly hospitality, a deep music culture and the beautiful Mississippi Delta landscape.

Greenville is nicknamed the “Birthplace of the Blues” as the original area where the “Blues” was first created during the American Civil War.  The Highway 61 Blues Museum is a great place to visit to take in the genre from the past and how it impacted the Delta and music in general.

The Belmont Plantation is a historic mansion that has been kept up to date since its inception in 1857.  Union soldiers once visited the plantation during the height of the Civil War in 1863.  In December of 1864 it headquartered the 4th Corps of the US Army of Cumberland.  You can visit the plantation and learn all about it including the people who lived and worked there throughout the years.

For those who enjoy the outdoors Greenville is a place worth seeing. The Mississippi River runs through the city and offers a relaxing walk by it at Warfield Point Park.  If you want to spend a day out on the boat fishing head over to Lake Ferguson.  A short distance over is the Delta National Forest with its lush green woods.  It’s a great place to take a hike and listen to the birds sing in the majestic Mississippi Delta.  The Delta is considered “wetlands” where the Mississippi River empties into other bodies of water and saturates surrounding areas.

Art is highly valued with the E.E. Bass Cultural Arts Center being at the front and center of the city.  The Center holds numerous events throughout the year including live performances and events.  Head over to the Greenville Arts Council to take in the rotation of exhibits from the local artists of Greenville.

Greenville has plenty of delicious southern cuisines to choose from.  Doe’s Eat Place is a local establishment serving up the best steaks and tamales in town.  Sherman’s is another popular local joint offering tastes of the Delta including mouthwatering Shrimp & Grits, Deep Fried Oysters and more.

Make sure to visit the Mississippi Delta Blues and Heritage Festival and enjoy with friends and family live performances from some of the top Blues musicians in the south.  The festival has an electric feel to it as the locals gather in and don’t miss the chance to attend this annual event.

Overall Greenville is a great place to call home with its diverse culture and relaxing atmosphere.  There is plenty to do with friends and family regardless of the time of year.
