Birmingham, Alabama is in the North Central part of the state with the largest metropolitan population in the state of around 1.1 million people. The city itself has a large African American population of close to 69% and the white population makes up most of the rest of the city at around 25%.
Birmingham’s history has a strong Civil Rights culture Movement. The city was front and center during the years of African Americans and their supporters fighting for equality in America. At one time Birmingham was the most segregated city in America. Martin Luther King Jr. led the Civil Rights movement in 1963 to help end segregation not only in Alabama but across the United States of America. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute chronicles the struggle for equality beginning in the late 1800’s with the Jim Crow Laws and through the 1960’s with MLK. The 16th Street Baptist Church is another frequented tourist destination. The church started in 1873 as the “first colored Baptist Church in Birmingham”.
Birmingham has a popular Art scene for locals and tourists to enjoy. The Birmingham Museum of Art holds some of the top artwork from around the world, from some of the best including Monet, Picasso and Andy Warhol. It is also home to the Alabama Jazz Hall. The Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center has some of the best entertainment in town ranging from Broadway performances to classical music events.
The city has plenty of other attractions to come and see. The ever-popular Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a must see. It is a very large site ranging some 67 acres that has beautiful landscapes, astonishing plants, diverse species, and breath-taking walking trails. It offers a variety of gardens that include Rose, Japanese and Southern Living gardens. Each garden offers a different glimpse of the site and pulls you into its tranquil beauty.
Oak Mountain State Park is located 30 minutes outside of the city and it covers close to 9,000 acres. The park has vast hiking trails, wooded terrain, and several relaxing lakes to drop a fishing pole into. The park even has a beach lakeside to cool off during the hot Alabama summers.
The Birmingham Barons are the pride and joy of the city when it comes to sports. The minor league baseball team of the Chicago White Sox dates to 1885. NBA superstar and 6-time NBA champion Michael Jordan retired from the NBA and made a run at playing professional baseball which led him to join the Barons in 1994 for a short stint before returning back to the NBA.
For the foodies, Birmingham has plenty of options to indulge in. Southern Barbecue is a city staple with one of the more popular BBQ joints being Jim N Nicks. It is a freezer less, authentic BBQ restaurant with seasoned pitmasters.
